Purpose of Position

This position exists to provide expert guidance and counsel on the selection, application, and processing of advanced metal plastic deformation theories and technologies for use in Timken's product offerings. The position requires an open-minded and innovative individual to create, organize, and conduct fundamental or applied research projects to develop the novel concepts or to optimize the existing methodologies for driving product performance excellence. This individual will also coordinate, lead, and execute cross-functional projects or programs, including support to the business units, that can lead to significant business and revenue growth for Timken.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Serves as a technical expert for The Timken Company in the application of advanced theories and practices of material conversion processes, specifically metal plastic deformations and treatments, to meet ever growing customer demands and expectations on widely diversified mechanical and power transmission components.
  • Introduces and develops new concepts and advanced technologies to expand the processing capabilities and product manufacturing methodologies, to promote the energy and material efficiencies, and to seek radical improvements in products quality and cost structure.
  • Provides to the management the guidance and advice to the direction of the existing or future programs or projects based on the scientific or technological development.
  • Able to conceive, plan, and execute complex engineering projects working in a systematic way either alone or in collaboration with others. Would be expected to take a lead role in such a collaborative effort. Solutions to these complex problems would be expected to be novel, elegant and be a significant contribution to engineering literature.
  • Acts as a mentor and counselor to junior associates, helping them to develop excellent technical, problem-solving and leadership skills.
  • Provides training to the organization on topics related to expertise.

Technical/Functional Skills

  • In-depth understanding and experience in mechanics (of elasticity, plasticity, and materials), metal forming technologies, steel-making processes, material science, statistics, and finite element analysis.
  • Be able to align the objectives of projects with the latest Timken and department technology roadmap and business strategy.
  • Experienced in project management with ability to drive timely completion of projects.
  • Demonstrated theoretical and analytical capabilities, problem-solving skills, and be detail oriented.
  • Effectively perform hands-on job, experimental testing design and execution, data analysis, and technical support to plants. Familiar with and easy in a machine shop environment.
  • Knowledgeable about the common mechanical and material testing technologies, and machining equipment and processes.
  • Excellent interpersonal and team skills, and communication and documentation skills.
  • Able to conduct economic analysis and lead large capital projects.
  • A demonstrable track record of significant technical accomplishments in previous assignments.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical or Material’s Engineering and 7 years of relevant work experience, or
  • PhD in Mechanical or Material’s Engineering
