Reporting to the Production Manager, the Heat Treat and Weld Manager drives growth, strategy, and long-term planning for both departments. The goal of this position is to achieve company goals with respect to customer satisfaction, safety, quality, delivery, and profit margins through effective production and workflow coordination.
Key Responsibilities
- Safety and CI:
- Participate in and lead incident investigations, shop inspections, and area toolbox meetings.
- Incident owner including root cause analysis, corrective actions, follow-up, and sign-off.
- Lead department CI solutions, assisting employees in implementation based on annual cost and time saving targets.
- Optimize heat treat process with a focus on improving productivity:
- Control the production, quality, and process of heat treatment.
- Evaluate the cost effectiveness, and incorporate new technologies into heat treat process
- Establish and maintain processes for case hardening of gears and pinions.
- Champion carburizing and induction hardening processes using technical expertise.
- Use problem solving techniques to focus on continuous improvements in heat treatment.
- Area Management:
- Plan and manage workflow to meet production delivery targets.
- Initiate work-force planning including recruitment requests.
- Communicates area-specific manufacturing and design requirements to planners to assist with accurate planning of jobs.
- Primary contact for department communication, including coordination with QA, Planning, and Engineering.
- Responsible for department NCRs including root cause analysis, path forward, and corrective actions.
- Allocates job materials to meet company’s manufacturing timeline, estimated cost targets, and minimized WIP cost.
- Provide timely and accurate preliminary quotes to meet customer requirements which follow sound engineering principles.
- Provide efficient and timely communication of estimated times, materials, costs, etc. to the customer service and sales teams.
- Review and recommend machine repairs; replacements of existing equipment and purchases of new equipment and tools (CAPEX).
- Complete post-job reviews to ensure job costs are within estimated targets, adjusting ensure future profitability.
- Annual and monthly budgeting and strategic planning to meet departmental fiscal targets.
- Employee Performance Management:
- Coach and empower Team Leads to implement and enforce direction, standards, policies and procedures.
- Cross trains staff to give the area flexibility and depth while increasing employee adaptability and skill.
- Evaluates training opportunities to determine its relevance, educational opportunities as to their benefit to Standard Machine.
- Participate in interviews for vacant positions, including responsibility for final hire decisions.
- Responsible for performance and compensation review for entire department
- Initiate disciplines, Development Action Plans (DAPs), and Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs) in conjunction with HR.
Qualifications
Our ideal candidate has 15 years of industry experience, 5+ years of post-educational experience, and possesses the following education and competencies.
Education
- Journeyman trades certification OR Bachelor’s degree with applicable major
- Journeyman: Welder preferred, Machinist and Industrial Mechanic will be considered
- Bachelor's degree: Metallurgical Engineering major preferred, Process/Chemical, Industrial, and Mechanical Engineering will be considered
- CWB Weld Certification(s) will be considered an asset
- P. Eng. Designation in SK, BC, MB, ON, QC will be considered an asset
Competencies
- Direct experience as a welder, and/or heat treat technologist
- Direct experience with carburizing, and metallurgical engineering
- Experience with gears, gear boxes, bearings, and mining replacement parts
- Ability to identify and assess risks that jeopardize company commitments
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills including conflict resolution
- Proven ability to lead projects and teams, demonstrating strong organization and communication skills
- Progress department tasks efficiently, including the use of LEAN principles
- Detailed understanding of manufacturing processes in a customized environment
- Adaptive problem-solving techniques including developing new solutions through analytical, interpretative, evaluative, creative, and innovative thinking (5 Why’s, 8D, and Fishbone)
