Overview of Project Engineer - Automation & Robotics

A Project Engineer in Automation & Robotics leads the design, integration, and implementation of automated systems, robotic equipment, and advanced manufacturing technologies. The role blends engineering expertise with project management to deliver high-performance automation solutions that improve efficiency, quality, and safety.

 

Key Responsibilities

Automation & Robotics Engineering

  • Design, develop, and integrate automation and robotic systems
  • Program and troubleshoot robot controllers
  • Conduct system simulations, cycle-time analysis, and feasibility studies for automation concepts.
  • Oversee installation, commissioning, and validation of automation equipment.
  • Ensure systems comply with safety standards

 

Project Management

  • Lead automation projects from concept through deployment, including scope, schedule, and budget management.
  • Coordinate cross-functional teams: mechanical, electrical, controls, manufacturing, and external integrators.
  • Prepare project documentation: functional specifications, risk assessments, FAT/SAT protocols, and change orders.
  • Track project milestones, identify risks, and implement corrective actions.

 

Technical Support & Continuous Improvement

  • Provide on-site support during system startup, debugging, and optimization.
  • Analyze production data to identify automation improvement opportunities.

 

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, Robotics, or related engineering field preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with robot programming, PLC logic, and industrial automation hardware.
  • Strong understanding of machine design, sensors, pneumatics, motion control, and industrial networks (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, DeviceNet).
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and P&IDs.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in fast-paced manufacturing environments.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing and Six Sigma principles.
