The objective of this position is to serve as a team member responsible for assisting with processing requests within the Tribology Lab in the Materials R&D areas. This position works closely with engineers, specialists, Quality, project leaders, and other lab analysts/technicians to ensure that tests to evaluate the friction and wear of materials are executed according to plan. The position also works closely with R&D management to ensure that the laboratory operates efficiently and safely, and its priorities are aligned with the needs of the Business Units and internal stakeholders. This position contributes to laboratory leadership and is expected to maintain a safe/clean laboratory environment while interfacing with team members, repair service providers, and machine manufacturers in order to maintain, repair or upgrade equipment.  

 

Essential Responsibilities:

 

  • Work with engineers, project leaders and team members to ensure that laboratory activities are closely aligned with the test schedule and priorities; maximize test equipment utilization.
  • Perform tests to evaluate material and component performance in accordance with standard procedures and test plans which are aligned with the needs of Operations, Quality, R&D and Product Teams.  
  • Characterize tested components using analytical equipment, including stereoscopes, microscopes, and various measuring/gaging tools.
  • Ensure thorough, accurate, and timely documentation of test results, progress, test samples, tooling inventory, etc.
  • Develop ideas for continuous improvement of laboratory productivity, reduction of test cycle-time and set-up time, and share best practices within the company.
  • Complete 6S audits (as assigned), maintain a clean and orderly laboratory, and guarantee safe storage of chemicals and fluids.
  • Ensure proper and timely maintenance, repair, and operation of test machines. Perform troubleshooting and repairs and assist with machine upgrades in coordination with internal personnel (e.g. engineers, Facilities) and external parties (e.g. MRO contractors, OEMs). 

 

Technical/Functional Skills:

 

  • Mechanical aptitude/ability and experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting mechanical equipment.
  • Understand application/machine/product drawings, product Safety Data Sheets, and technical/test specifications.
  • Detail oriented. Results focused.
  • Strong interpersonal and team skills.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Computer skills using MS Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and proprietary machine interfacing software.
  • Experience with CAD modeling software is a plus.

 

Basic Qualifications:

 

  • Associate's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field with 2 years of experience
