This position plans and executes projects related to new product development, including design, analysis (FEA, dynamic bearing tools, etc.), development, and testing. Project work will serve both internal and external customers as requested and be effectively implemented to provide world-leading value. Specifically, this position will have technical authority and expertise in advanced mechanical modeling and product development related to bearings and other tribological machine components. This position requires that the individual has experience in synthesizing new methods for mechanical analysis of steel tribological systems and expertise in advanced mechanical analysis tools. This position is recognized throughout the company as an expert in the field that provides guidance both internally and externally on behalf of The Timken Company. Project leadership and technical report publication experience is required.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Responsible for new product development activities in support of Timken's core businesses in friction management and mechanical power transmission, including initiating, planning, and directing projects to address the needs of the business.
- Lead and serve as a member on development teams to achieve company goals in profitability and growth. Project manager for major corporate strategic initiatives that involve development of new products and advanced analysis of existing products to serve internal and external customer needs.
- Proactive technical collaboration with the R&D, Product Pipeline, Sales, Marketing, and Global Manufacturing teams within the enterprise.
- Interact with test laboratories as necessary to experimentally prove new product developments or validate newly developed technical models.
- Perform analyses and advise or liaison with managerial, professional, and technical personnel in Timken’s business units and technology centers to retain technical prominence.
- Research, study, and compare technical publications to stay current and up to date on latest product technology trends and innovations. Encourages and educates broader R&D team as appropriate.
- Represent Timken by giving presentations and publishing high-quality technical research papers as appropriate both internally and externally. Represents Timken to external customers to achieve desired objectives in a professional and ethical manner.
Required Technical/Functional Skills:
- Experience taking an open-ended situation and developing a research program to address it and draw scientifically valid conclusions
- Fundamental knowledge of engineering principles and product development with emphasis on bearings and other tribological products
- Experience in development and application of new mechanical modeling and analytical methods
- Proven ability to influence internal and external customers and suppliers
- Advanced software and computing skills, especially as related to advanced mechanical engineering and mathematical programming
- Experience in bearing technology, especially performance analysis and modeling (e.g., fatigue, equilibrium, dynamics, contact mechanics, lubrication)
- Effective team and communication skills
- Proven project management skills
- Strong technical writing capabilities
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in mechanical engineering (or closely related) and a minimum of 6 years of experience in bearing/tribological research or engineering experience; or
- PhD in mechanical engineering (or closely related) and preferably 3 years of experience in bearing/tribological research or engineering experience
