Timken Power Systems, Philadelphia Gear brand has a current opening for an Acoustic Engineer to predict, analyze, and reduce noise and vibration from gearboxes through physics-based modeling, simulation, and data-driven design guidance.   The person in this role will use NVH software (Romax, Actran, or equivalent) to evaluate gear/shaft/bearing/housing dynamics and airborne/structure-borne sound transmission. This position partners with design engineering to translate NVH insights into practical design changes and deliver quieter, more reliable gear drives for commercial and marine drives.

Responsibilities include:

  • Build and run NVH simulation models of gearbox systems to predict tonal and broadband noise, transmission error, mesh excitation, structural response, and radiated sound.
  • Create clear design recommendations (gearing, micro-geometry, shafts/bearings, housings, isolation, damping, and lubrication-related factors) to achieve noise reduction targets.
  • Develop NVH test plans and procedures to enable correlation, coordinate execution with test teams.
  • Correlate simulations with test data; refine models and assumptions to improve predictive accuracy and drive root-cause closure on noise issues.
  • Prepare concise technical reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders; support customer discussions on NVH when needed.
  • Support standards compliance, documentation, and engineering procedures related to NVH and gearbox design.
  • Contribute to team capability building via knowledge sharing, coaching, and tool/method improvements.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in acoustics or mechanical engineering or related field required.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in rotating machinery or power transmission NVH experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain U.S. DoD clearance
  • Familiarity with vibrations and acoustics: Modal, harmonic, transient, order analysis, transfer path concepts
  • Experience with one or more NVH/CAE tool, such as Romax, Actran, Simcenter, Nastran, Abaqus, etc.
  • Proficiency with CAD design software, especially Solidworks, is preferred
  • Prior experience in Industrial or Marine gear drive application and design preferred
  • Familiarity with AGMA, API and MIL specifications preferred
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, Powerpoint and other features of MS office software

This position may require access to United States export controlled technical data (“CTD”) and hardware under the Departments of US State (ITAR) and/or Commerce (EAR).  Eligible candidates are; US Citizens, Green Card holders, Asylees or others eligible to receive US export license authorizations. Candidate must be authorized to work in the US.
