Radiation Safety Officer

Schulz Electric, a Timken Motor & Crane Company, has a current opening for a Radiation Safety Officer based out of New Haven, CT regional service center. The primary role of this position is to oversee all decontamination activities relative to the free release of electric motors that are shipped to Schulz for overhaul and/or re-wind. The Radiation Safety Officer will verify regulatory compliance through periodic inspections of the program, including review of regulatory inspections and audits. This position is responsible for the maintenance and implementation of the Radiation Safety program. Occasional travel required (<10%) to customer sites and periodic company training.




Essential Responsibilities:

  • Implementation/ Maintenance of the Radiation Safety Program, including:
    • Training of all employees regarding the Radiation Safety Program
    • Preparing & maintaining Radiation Safety procedures (WRPs, MPs)
  • Oversight of decontamination activities relative to the free release of electric motors that are shipped to Schulz for overhaul and/or re-wind
  • Oversee Packaging & Transportation of Radioactive Material in compliance with 10 CFR NRC, Part 71,
  • Assuring the accuracy, completeness and proper storage of Radiation Safety records
  • Must be familiar with 10 CFR Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Part 20, Standards for Protection against Radiation
  • Identify and recommend improvements in radiation protection technologies
  • Identify and recommend changes in radiation safety regulations or standards
  • Continuous review of the program for applicability and accuracy
  • Verify regulatory compliance through periodic inspections of the program including review of regulatory inspections and audits
  • Verify all license related correspondence is accurate and concise prior to issuance
  • Oversight of radiation and contamination surveys and postings of all areas in which radioactive material is used or stored
  • Oversight of receipt, surveys, and delivery of byproduct material
  • Package, label, survey, etc. of all outgoing shipments of byproduct material
  • Oversight of the personnel monitoring program, including determining the need for and evaluating bioassays, reviewing personnel exposure records, and developing corrective actions for those exposures approaching maximum permissible limits
  • Develop and maintain the waste disposal program
  • Be a steward of the company's assets, brand, reputation and investments.
  • Ensure that the highest ethical and commercial standards are maintained.
  • Manage resources to support 100% on time, on specification and on budget, standard operating procedures and strategy objectives.


Technical/ Functional Skills:

  • Good oral & written communication skills are required and teamwork approach with onsite team
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Skilled in all basic MS Office products and working knowledge of ERP systems.


Basic Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma (or equivalent) required, Associate's degree in technical related field preferred
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working in electric motor shop or similar repair background where free release of customer equipment is required, prior to proceeding with overhaul or repair
  • 3 years’ experience in US Navy Nuke Engineering Laboratory Tech E-6 or above preferred
  • 3 years’ experience in Radiation Protection related duties in the Commercial Nuclear Industry preferred
  • DOT 49 CFR Subpart H and IATA Hazmat Shipping certifications preferred
  • Must be a US Citizen
