  • Works from blueprints and written or verbal instructions.                                                                         
  • Checks materials for hardness using Rockwell hardness tester or hand file and checks case depth using Brinell microscope.  Prepares samples for tests by cutting to desired size using abrasive cut-off wheel, coating samples with borax powder, placing samples in laboratory-type furnaces for specified time cycles, heating to desired temperatures in salt bath or hot oil and quenching in water or oil.  Grinds and polishes samples using grinding wheels, belt sander, polishing paper, and bench-type buffing equipment. Sets up and calibrates automatic gauging equipment and individual gauges using various gauges and procedures.  Troubleshoots gauges, gauging equipment and machine parts for cause of improper operation using indicators, micrometers, and hand tools.
  • Inspects various materials in process visually for surface defects and dimensionally for conformance to specifications and tolerances using various gauging equipment and masters.  Checks length, I.D., O.D., rib, taper, etc.  Notifies Machine Operators and/or Supervisor of unusual conditions or variations from tolerance.
  • Occasionally makes minor repairs and adjustments to gauging equipment, electronic and mechanical gauges, and machine parts.  Disassembles gauges and gauging equipment, locates source of trouble, and repairs or replaces broken or worn parts.  Fits, aligns, calibrates, and adjusts parts and reassembles using gauging equipment and hand tools.
  • Must use various gauges such as pneumatic, electronic, size and taper, and set up; gauge blocks, surface plate, masters, comparators, dial indicators, micrometers, Rockwell hardness tester, microscope, cut-off machine, bench grinder, polishing wheels, belt sander, high temperature salt bath, laboratory reheat furnace, transporter, hand truck, etc.
